Towns and Activities - Apollo Bay
Apollo Bay is the half way mark on the Great Ocean Road set on a 3 kilometre long beach with the rolling hills of the Otway Ranges as a backdrop. Like many places along the Great Ocean Road, the beach is a focus for activity all year round. Swim in the clear water, sea kayak with local seals, indulge in some deep-sea fishing, learn to surf, or horse ride along the beach at sunset.
Apollo Bay is located 195 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, a scenic 3½ hour drive by car via the Great Ocean Road. A recommended shorter alternative route is via Forrest and Birregurra, which takes just under 3 hours. Daily coach services are available from Melbourne or rail/coach services via Geelong.
The town is a great base from which to explore the Otway Ranges and nearby Cape Otway Peninsula. The town has a small harbour which is home to a small fishing fleet and a popular launching place for recreational fishing boats and yachts.
The annual Apollo Bay Music Festival held in April has become a major
drawcard.
The beach provides a good place to learn to surf, there is plenty of space to
spread your towel out and relax. Lifeguards patrol in season.
