The Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) is renowned for rugged mountain ranges, rich cultural heritage and spectacular wildflower displays. The 168,000 hectare National Park is ideal for outdoor activities including rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing and hiking to name just a few. Horse riding can be done north of the Park.

The Grampians are a series of four spectacular sandstone ridges running north to south with steep and craggy slopes on the eastern side and gentler slopes to the west. They are the result of earth movements lifting and tilting the hard sandstones creating an impressive landscape of peaks and valleys.

Recently a bushfire destroyed 85,000 hectares in the Park but the village of Halls Gap was saved. Many of the walking tracks are still open and it is a great time to visit to view the effects of fire in the Australian bush and to observe how the bush regenerates.

National parks in the region are a haven for birds, with nearly 45 per cent of all bird species found in Victoria being identified here. Reptiles and mammals, including kangaroos, koalas, bandicoots and emus are also plentiful.
The town of Halls Gap is picturesquely situated in the National Park’s heart at the foot of the Wonderland Ranges, while other tempting locations are dotted around the edge of the park.
